Default Bad News For Snail Kites

It looks like the nest I have been following in Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is a failed nest site. There were never any chicks and now the adults are ignoring the nest. There are active nests in the area, but not where you can get close enough to photograph (Unless You Ride A Gator There).

2 - Male Kite

Terrific shots of those amazing birds, well captured especially the first.

It is disappointing, but such things happen. A snake or other predator may have gotten the eggs even before they hatched. It is also possible that they are a new pair - sometimes early attempts fail until they learn the ropes. Still nice pictures, though - worth the effort.

Thanks for another great series. The K-7 really did a great job.

Sad for the bird population, but great photos for us to see! Do snail kites attempt a second nesting if the first fails? Does not seem to be the rule for most raptors in our region, but we do not have snail kites here... Just wondering. Thanks again for some great photos of these fine birds!
