The Friendly Green Heron returns (3 imgs)

Hi All,

I was playing around with more TC combos, and the same Green Heron (I think) from a couple of days ago flew in, landed about 20 feet away, and started to walk along the shore. This is pretty incredible, since these are the only two times I've seen a Green Heron at this lake. . . and it chose to land at about the closest point possible on the lake's shoreline.

I took off the 2x TC that I had stacked on the 17x AFA and the FA*300/2.8 so I had a known quantity lens combo and followed it for a while, then moved to get in front of it, so I could hide somewhat behind a tree as it approached (and I'd have a better angle with the light as it was).

This guy didn't seem to mind me or the other people who were walking their dogs nearby. It would look when someone got within 40 feet, but when it saw that they weren't approaching, it just went along with the business at hand, grabbing a few minnows and insects from the water.

I like to try to get shots of birds walking, so I think that these are some of the best of the over 100 shots I got of this guy. . . all shot from a tripod with a Wimberley Sidekick, K7, FA*300/2.8 +1.7x AFA (510mm), ISO 400, F10 (actual Av at the lens was about f5.8 -- the AFA automatically converts the Av for the 1.7x magnification in the VF and for the exif)

If this guy keeps showing up, I might have to name it. . .:D

The combo works well for you, but the lighting wasn't the most favorable - best in #2, which IMO is the best shot, and one I really like. The bird has a really intent look. Unusual to see a normally sleek bird so disheveled - perhaps you can name it "Scruffy." :D

These are such pretty birds, well done!

Great pictures...some of them are so clear that it looks like I could reach out and touch it...wouldn't do that with a wild bird, of course.:icon_lol:

Terrific avian action shots of a wonderful looking bird, looks like he doesn't have to be afraid of much.

Nice shots. Wonder why his feathers are so ruffled. You'd think if he'd been attacked by something he'd not be so calm.

Beautiful captures of a handsome bird. The chestnut color of the bird’s breast is striking.

The 300mm 2.8 along with the 1.7AFTC is a great lens combo.

As usual great shots Scott, I can never get that close to one of those around here.

i have never had a bird walk towards me that i can recall
