As others have already said, congrats! You're smart not to try to understand the logic behind judges' decisions, because as far as I can tell, there is no logic behind the decision making process. And the prize money? I thnk it's no coincidence that everyone on this forum has a day job outside of photography.

well done, persistance pays off
the waterfall is a cracker of a photo

i wouldnt worry to much about the judges
they may not even be photographically minded, maybe local politicians or someone like that

spend the winnings wisely, a new camera or lenses maybe

ps i hope this encourages you to enter next year too

Congratulations, jelpee. I knew you could do it. I gave up trying to figure out the judges a while ago. One year I noticed that every photo that had fog in it had gotten a 3rd place prize. That made me realize they must have some checklist they go by and since the photos weren't "clear", etc they got less points. And, you can definitely tell what the judges like for topics sometimes. Sometimes it's flowers, sometimes animals.

Anyway, I think both of these images of yours are top notch. It's a good thing we only lose out a dollar or two by not getting the first place, huh!
