Default Poor Guy Lost His Tail

And it looks like some of it's wings. This Purple Galinule was on the boardwalk at Green Cay Wetlands and was very reluctant to return to the swamp. Does not look like it was a good experience. The last photo shows how it's back end should look.

Looks like that could have a traumatic effect on a guy!

Hi Ed,

WOW! That's quite a loss, and it seems to have healed over pretty well -- It looks like the bird is coping pretty well, and is healthy. Do you have any guesses as to what might have happened? In any event, this guy is probably pretty happy to be alive.

The only time I've seen something similar around here was with one of our dirt common House Sparrows which didn't have any tail feathers. It took a couple of looks at the pic I took of it to realize what was missing, and the bird seemed to have no trouble flying, so I guess it adapted okay. . .

That's amazing that it's survived.

Ed, that was a big ouch!!!!!

I had a Cardinal at my feeder all last winter that had its tail feathers missing. I'm anxious to see if it reappears again this winter.

I'll bet that hurt! At least the feathers will grow back at the next molt, if not before. Small birds often lose their tails to cats, hawks or other predators with bad aim - maybe you can blame this one on a nearsighted alligator!

That's one tough little bird - and one fine photographer too!
