Default Alameda NAS (4 IMG)

The Alameda Naval Air station is a de-commissioned military base in California. It was closed back in 1997, so it's had time to develop into a nice photography location. I actually went there to work on lighting techniques for cars, but forgot to bring my wireless trigger of all things. So I spent what little time I had left driving around and scouting for interesting locations; needless to say, there were a lot.

And here's my lame car shot, since I didn't have my trigger to remotely fire my flashes:

I will definitely need to make a return trip here (with a nicer car, and some backup for when it gets dark).

Hey Jason,
I like your photos, I particularly like the background on the last one. would be even better if you could get it without the fence?

also like the first one, I have a similar shot I took last April at work. Yours looks like its in a little better shape. Interesting, 3000 miles apart and the same valve, I guess the Kennedy Valve Co. was pretty much the way to go back then.

Nice subject matter, texture and lighting! Goes to show you that you do not need glamourous subject matter to make good pictures! Somehow, I always fail to see the artistic value in things that are run down!! Very nicely done!

Very cool shots! I love the last one, a sturdy YJ (think it's a J unless its a TJ with the YJ's back decal - never sure without seeing the headlights) is a cool car in my opinion, might not be new and fast, but it's sure fun. I didn't realize that Alameda was closed - what are they doing with it now?

You got it correct; it's a 94 YJ.

Various buildings are occupied by companies now. I think the barracks are being used as low-income housing. Occasionally the Mythbusters or other production companies will utilize the runway for various stuff. For example, a loop of highway was constructed on the runway to film the freeway chase scene in Matrix: Reloaded. There are also lots of new housing developments being built. It seems the remnants of the NAS are slowly being replaced. I'm glad I found it when I did.

An additional image taken at the NAS:

Interesting shots, great exposure and good colours.

Thanks for the photos. I flew out of NAS Alameda for 15+ years and finished up commanding a squadron there in the last two years.
