Whoever or whatever painted the flowers, job was well done. And your pictures do them justice. If you park your car under one, the tree is still as beautiful. But the car might need a wash...

I've seen plenty of these in South Africa, I have heard that they are typical for Washington DC (US) and now you show us Australia. Anyone knows where they grow naturally?

They (several species) are native to the tropical Americas (Central and South America and the West Indies). The widely cultivated form imported as Jacaranda mimosifolia, has been, according to some, incorrectly identified, and actually is Jacaranda acutifolia. Either way, it is the same tree.
