Default First Vacation Pix...

Wednesday Oct 7th We went up to Cades Cove for a look see. and there was plenty to see. They had a working grist mill. Back then they only built buildings big enough to do the job and that was it!

There is always too many people around to get really good shots but, I did my best. Make a note of the dark area between the mans left elbow and the boy in blue...

It was pitch black under there but, just enough room to get my lens and 450 flash in the gap if I held the camera sideways.
this is the gears connecting the water wheel to the mill stone.

Shooting to the left.

You can see how the power is transferred to the mill stone at the top of the vertical shaft on the left.

This is a shot of the wall in back of me that kept me from getting back far enough to get a good wide shot, this room wasn't more than 9 or 10 ft by 15ft...

Great pics, GW, thanks for the tour. I've never been inside an old, but still working, mill. Very cool.

You're more than welcome, Mtnman. I should have mentioned that they sell the flower they mill to tourist. They actually had to slow the mill down because they were making more than they could sell.

I've been there also GW. A very interesting sight in the Cove. One thing though...the wife and I were on a motorcycle and the traffic was bumper to bumper and moving at the pace of a 90 year old matron on a walker. One way traffic only and not much shoulder room the temps were in the high 90's.....I kept thinking...What if some bears show up right now.....the wife and I would have made a quick snack for them probably!! LOL
