Default Some birds on the wintry trails

We continue snowy and cold, giving me some time to continue repairing trails damaged by the last big storm. Also some time to check out and try to document winter bird behavior. Here are a few recent shots.

First a Carolina Wren - very vigorously defending this little hornbeam tree...

The supply of Poison Ivy berries is dwindling fast - thanks to lots of hungry birds. I knew that Downy Woodpeckers enjoyed these high-calorie treats, but didn't realize that White Throated Sparrows like them too (or is he dropping that one on purpose?)

When it's cold and windy, the small birds head to the Cedar thickets for shelter. Found a very interesting mixed flock yesterday, including Bluebirds, Cedar Waxwings, Yellow Rumped Warblers, and Robins. As soon as the Robin gave his alarm call, the whole flock took off!

Here are two crops of the same image - a Waxwing (and a female Bluebird) apparantly ignoring the flight antics of a couple of male bluebirds. Would appreciate any comments/critique of these especially!

We know the cold weather has moved in when the Ring Billed Gulls and the Mergansers start showing up at the park's lake.

Hope you enjoyed a glimpse of our park's wintry feathered neighbors, and that all are safe from the storms. Thanks for any comment/critique!

Very nice collection. My favorite is the Ring Billed Gull (I believe its the bird standing on one leg?). Its very sharp and the colors really stand out.

Thanks

Another great set Mole.
If that blue bird gets any fatter, he wont be able to fly!
That robin is really something! Nice work.

the bird coming into land was well worth the attempt
a bit far away, but i am sure you couldnt just run closer or carry a longer heavier lens around
i have to admit i dont think i can pick a favourite among the birds
they are all well focused and well detailed shots
