Birds This Weekend

Quite a few birds around the yard and feeders this weekend, including one very infrequent visitor. The Northern Mockingbird is the state bird of Arkansas, and is very common, but this is only the second one I have ever seen in my yard.

This pair of red-bellied woodpeckers, female and male, spent the weekend pigging out at my feeders

Another visitor I had been missing this weekend was a white-breasted nuthatch....the first I had seen this year.

And of course, there was the usual collection of cardinals, song sparrows, and white-throated sparrows.

Hope you enjoy.

Great work Paul. I think these are you best bird shots to date. The woodpecker shots are great!

All fine shots Paul, the second mockingbird and the red-bellied woodpeckers are my favorites.

Were these hand held or with tripod? I assume that the Bigma was the lens used, if so you are making big progress with it.

Thanks for the nice words, guys. Good light makes picture-taking a whole lot easier, lol. I was able to sit for a long period each morning this weekend, making the birds far more comfortable coming in a little closer than I can usually get them. Of course that means less cropping and better detail.

John, I'm convinced the focus system in the K-7 is much sharper than the earlier Pentaxes. I have had little opportunity to really test its speed on sports shooting, although my gut feeling is that it's also quite a bit faster.

Lou, they were taken hand-held with the Bigma. I almost never use a tripod for bird shooting unless I'm using a 2X teleconverter on top of the Bigma. I always try to be ready for flight shots, although I didn't include any in this group. (The only crisp flight shots I got were of black vultures, and they just weren't interesting enough to keep. The red-shouldered hawk I kept tracking just refused to cooperate and come down to an altitude where the photo was anything more than a massive crop.)

Paul,

I'm jealous. Not just because of the great shots, but more importantly because of the following...

Ditto on the above comments Paul...good exposures, good compositions, and sharp with lots of detail!

John, there's a simple trick, but you won't be able to use it for about twenty years or so....."get your kids grown and out of the house." ;)

Paul - Some wonderful bird shots - great color & detail, great personality.

PS - I have accomplished the "get your kids grown & out of the house" part, but still don't seem to have the "sit as long as you want to" accomplished!

Paul

Mine have been out of the house for years, and I still can't find time to do that. :(
