Default FIW and WIF

After all the snow and (for us) extreme cold, past few days have been amazingly warm. Perfect conditions for taking lots of schoolchildren out in nature, and finishing some repairs to park trails.

Out in a schoolyard with some children yesterday, and noticed some FIW's (Flowers In Winter!). These tiny (less than 10mm) blooms are called Speedwell, a species of Veronica. It's not a native plant, but still it's exciting to see something blooming this time of year!

Earlier, while working to clear fallen limbs on a park trail, I noticed a rather bold Downy Woodpecker. Only had a shorter lens on the camera (A 70-210), so tried some stalking. Did not get close enough for a good photo, but did scare her enough to get a pretty nice WIF (Woodpecker In Flight) shot!

Gray Squirrels continue to unearth their cached food, and many were out enjoying the sunshine these past few days!

Canada Geese also seem pleased with the return of warm sunshine!

Despite the prolonged cold spell, there's still plenty of wildlife food persisting in the thickets, like these Bittersweet berries - a promise of more chances to observe wildlife in the weeks to come...

Expecting cooler and much wetter weather for the next few days, but looking forward to getting out again soon, and sharing some more winter discoveries. Hope you enjoyed this warm wintry stroll!

The shot of the downy in flight is outstanding, especially with that size lens. These little guys move so quickly, they are extremely hard to capture.

FTW? You never miss an opportunity for a good photo, do you?

With a longer lens you would have had less DOF and might have missed that nice WIF shot.

Nice shots, as usual.

Nice change of scenery after our days of snow.
