Scott and Lou, thanks for the kind words.

Scott: In answer to your questions, Snowy egrets employ a variety of foraging techniques, one of which is called "foot stirring," in which the bird rapidly pokes around in the bottom with one foot to scare out hidden fish - when they swim across the yellow feet, they are more visible and can be captured. This is what the bird in #8 was doing the instant before I snapped the shutter, as you can tell from the rings on the water around its leg.

The back of the legs typically is yellow, except in breeding adults, when it turns black. I do not know why this is, except to guess that the yellow might be a visual signal from the rear that the bird is not receptive to mating.

This picture is from a thread I posted some time ago in the Wildlife Forum on foraging techniques (it is also my desktop background photo) that illustrates foot-stirring particularly well:

Fascinating series. I always feel like I've learned something when I read one of your threads, penolta. Excellently lit throughout with good detail. I can't pick a favorite from the series, but I really like the roof escape shots.

Always learning new things. That's interesting about their feet. Never crossed my mind that might be a reason.

Very nice series. I think the second one he's showing you his best side.
