As I intend for this to be an ongoing investment I'm honestly not sure what my overall budget will be yet, but I can't thank you all enough for the wealth of info you've given me here!

I've already printed this thread so that I'll have all your info readily available once I'm ready to make my first lens purchase. This info is exactly what I was looking for and more, thanks again all!

That is the best move right now. Play around with the kit lens and keep track of which focal lengths you make the greatest use of. If you tend to use the 18mm end most then look into wide angle lenses, not ideal for portrait work but sometimes we we tend to take a different direction when we actually have the camera to play with. If you are using the 55mm end most then start looking for what is available now (hopefully the FA 50mm is still available, it is a low cost alternative to the new designs).
