Default My First GHO

Shot my first Great Horned Owl in Loxahatchee today. Unfortunately he was asleep with eyes closed the whole time I was there. His mate, in the nest, showed no more then the top of her head. Now I will have to work to get shot with eyes open, and flight shots.

Very nicely done, Ed. You did well to get close enough to get this kind of shot. I have never been fortunate enough to catch one of these guys in the daytime, although I walked out my front door one morning this week to a cacophony of hooting in a tree in my front yard. Unfortunately, it was still dark and I didn't have my camera.

A whistle or a crow call may get the owl to open his eyes for you. Nice shot in spite of the closed eyes.

Nice going Ed, I just can't get myself motivated enough to get out in this weather.
I guess that's what separates the nature photographers form the wanna Be's

Great photos - colors just right, wonderful feather detail.

As Lou suggested, you might try a crow call to get those eyes open. I've had some success with GHO's by giving a screech owl call...
