Alright, had a better chance to get out and take some pictures today, took the kids for a walk along the river. Caught a few seagulls and a boat. I'm not particularly good at BIF so be warned, I just wanted to see how it turned out. The BIF shots are cropped a fair amount. A few of these are shot under 300mm, around 210-260mm. EXIF is with the photos. Still very pleased with this lens.

This last one, I was leaning against a tree for more stability as i have a shaky hand.

@ Big Dawg: Thank you! While the DA version offers some considerable extras as I enlisted above, the price difference as well as few grams lighter weight is negligible. For me, the DA 55-300 is surprisingly light given the range of focal length and image quality. The DAL version being bungled as kit generally and DA version sold seperately might cause some quality pass issue, which is the reason of conflicting reviews.

..........................................

@NMRecording: Maybe I'm wrong but as with Big Dawg, I too would stay away from the DAL under the impression of my disappointing experience with my previous one which I returned.

.........................................

@ Scott: Thank you for the elaboration. I quite agree with your opinion about the Quick Shift on the DA being an underrated feature.

@MadMikeSS: Thank you for vivifying the thread with your captures taken with the DA 55-300. I quite agree with Ned on the bird hovering over the water with the neat reflection!

For those who're interested to see the use of this lens under challenging situations, I've submitted some indoor sport event captures entitled 'Joy of Taekwondo' in the Sports & Action Photos forum taken with this lens relying especially on the 100-300mm range with the help of the Metz flash unit: http://forums.steves-digicams.com/sports-action-photos/167650-joy-taekwondo.html

Maybe I'm just being picky. Haha, seemed a little soft for some reason, but when I look at them again they look alright.
