I think the branches in No 1 are distracting - they draw attention to themselves and away from the fog, interrupting the creation of the intended mood. The second gives a clear view (in a manner of speaking) of the foggy street - the branches on the one side and the trunks on the other frame the scene and enhance the mood. It is a great shot.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I like the idea of removing the manhole and having Bogart as a neighbor.

I love number Two. The manhole cover really adds to the composition and offers something different from the nice moody atmosphere to the image and something to contrast the nice bending shadow in the foreground. One is good but when after looking at two, i feel the manhole is missing :-p

The manhole should stay. It gives the shot additional mystery. Lovely composition.
