Default Locomotives--In your face!

In the space of about 10 minutes I was fortunate to catch 2 locomotive sets earlier today. I thought the early evening light added a nice touch. K10D + Pentax 18-250mm.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe's locmotive #5486 leading a train heading south...unusual to see it on the Norfolk Southern tracks.

Norfolk Southern's locmotive #7519 leading a train heading north

I agree on the lighting, I really like the first one, looks like a fun subject to shoot

Great shots, love the color and detail in the first one!

Must remember to take a trip to the local railway conservation place, they have some great "steamies" and 1940's diesel trains.

Really nice, Jehan. You're right about the lighting in the first. Came out good.

I like them both Jehan, #2 could use a little fill flash to bring out the shadows but still a great shot.

Hnikesch,Tachikoma, Patty & Les: Thanks. The evening light really brought out the colors in the BNSF locomotive. The second locomotive in #1 is a Union Pacific which has an equally colorful paint scheme--a nice change compared to the black & white of the Norfolk Southern line.

GW: You are correct about the shadows on #2. For starters, it's tough to shoot a black and white paint scheme. A flash would have been great... can't you imagine me with a huge monolight standing trackside?

Take a look at the shot below: There were 2 pigeons that were foraging on the tracks--look at them scatter when the train approached
