Late Spring is "buggy"
1 Attachment(s)
Out on the trails a lot this week, between storms and showers, getting all in readiness for the busy summer vacation season!

Trees are all leafed out, so the forests are quite shady. Now a lot of the flower and bug action is moving from deep woods out into the fields and forest edges. Here's one of the forest edge blooms, a tiny native iris called Blue-Eyed Grass.

Several of our mid-season butterflies are just hatching out. The sunny fields are suddenly full of these Little Wood Satyrs, but they hardly ever stop long enough for a good photo. Had to chase this guy for 10 minutes or more!

Pearl Crescents and Silver Checkerspots are also suddenly very common in the hot sunny fields. Look very similar, but the Pearl Crescents are about half the size of the checkerspots.

Zebra Swallowtails are looking a bit faded these days. The spring generation is about to die off, but there will be another hatching later this summer. This tattered Z Swallowtail was just too tired to fly off!

Of course, warm wet weather is perfect for dragonflies. Here are a few recent ones. First is an Ashy Clubtail (they are everywere in the damp fields these days), then two views of a male White Tailed Dragonfly (can you guess where the name comes from?), and a rather poor attempt at a flight shot - probably a Common Baskettail.

Was trying to get some good shots of a rather strange little flower called "Hearts-A-Burstin," and noticed a rather unusual pollinator...

Just one more shot - a flower beetle enjoying some fine pollen in showy evening primrose - a common field edge bloom these days.

Will be gone until late next week, assisting at a training session at another State Park, so thanks in advance for any comments, critique, and suggestions.

Hope all have a wonderful late-spring (or late autumn if you are in the S Hemisphere) week!

this set is simply stunning. one of the best you have posted. i would give critique on each, but i would just be repeating myself.

everything here is perfectly exposed, sharp as a tack, contrast is perfect.

if i had to pick favorites it would be #1 and 2, and then the zebra swallowtail shot.

(you are making me anxious to get my vivs1 105mm....)

Have to agree with Dustin, very strong results and certainly you have improved during your time here to be at the top end of the shooters we have so it is a joy to look at your work.
