Default Devil's Hole State Park

Today we didn't venture far from home, but the hike was still tiring, not so much for the length of the trail as how must climbing had to be done to go down into the Niagara Gorge and then again to get back out. Devil's Hole State Park is located north of the Whirlpool in the Niagara Gorge. Drove past it many times heading up to see my wife (then girlfriend) who was living at Niagara University right nearby. She was the one who suggested this little excursion today.

Saw this fellow hangin with the seagulls down by the fast moving waters. Seen many egrets and GBH's around here, but never one of these. Very cool.

Since this is the holiday weekend that kicks off the summer season, this one is most appropriate. The Whirlpool Jetboat taking a full boatload up the river through the class 5 rapids. I actually went on the jetboat at the end of the season last year and had a great time, got soaking wet. There was actually 4 of these open boats going back and forth through the rapids while we were walking along the trails.

And some shots from above along the rim of the gorge to end it off.

Looking north along the niagara gorge towards the power project.

The power project a little closer up.

Thank you all for looking.

That heron looks very similar to the herons we have here.

First shot of the boat is very nice - great perspective and the boat coming up out fo the water gives it action.

All so natural until we see the power plant - necessary but depressing.

Is that a UFO I spot in the last image?

Thanks again Ronny, as much as Niagara Falls is a major tourist trap, a short drive up the gorge you can get away from the worst of it and still see some nice scenery/wildlife.
