just wondering if anyone has used the flat/white push in body cap without a lens for a custom WB

No - I've always shot a white or grey card. Many people think that doing it that way (at least I think they've usually used one on a filter with a lens) have said they think it's more accurate. I can sort-of understand that as you are measuring incident light rather than reflected light, but I'm just not convinced. Often the light isn't consistent and using a card where your subject is sounds better to me.

If you look in the back of a lot of photography magazines at the endless adverts, they do sell something similar to a body/lens cap for taking a white balance reading, so your idea sounds perfectly reasonable.

Never thought of using it that way, and I guess it can work.

Only I thought that lenses can change the white balance to. I know that some of my lenses have a more distinct blueish look. Not much of a difference, but a difference.

Also having to remove the lens to take a wb reading is something that I won't see myself doing.
