Default Damsel in Distress

As I mentioned yesterday, I came across my first damsel / dragonfly of the year. A tiny thing it was hiding out in the bamboo grove at the back of my house. Between 2 & 3 inches in length including abdomen & tail (if anyone can tell me what genus & family it was I'd be grateful). It fluttered around a bit then settled on the dusty back wall - only to be disturbed by my dog jumping into the bamboo to see what I was up to ..... and thereby leading to it's tragic demise.

It flew straight up the wall and into the dark corner where a spider had strategically weaved it's ambush. Thereafter entailed an epic struggle to the death however the damsel had little chance because not only had her wings been snared but she also then got her tail entangled too. The spider darted in and out, no doubt biting venom into it's prey, until near the end when (if you look closely at the rear of the spider) it started to clothe her in her funeral gown. Fait accompli, c'est la vie.

Sorry about the poor quality shots - it was a very dark corner and I was shooting almost straight up (and they were very small - most crops are about 1/10 or smaller of the originals) but I thought some of you might be vicariously thrilled, but saddened, by this epic tragedy (OK a little over dramatic there but you get the picture).

Great story, only to bad that the first of the year had to have this fate.

Aaaw bless him!

Great shots GW, damselflies (and dragonflies) have a pretty mean set of jaws on them, so it could have gone either way.

Can't help you identify the species though, doesn't look like what we get around here.

Thanks Ronny - yes, I felt quite sad for the Damsel. Guess the spider's brood were well fed though.

Thanks Ash (I think - I don't think GW is going to want to take credit for this particular series though) !
