Default Scorpion Fly!

Until a few weeks back when someone posted their shots of one, I had never heard of this bug before, and was only after reading up on it, I discovered we have them in the UK as well.

So colour me surprised today when I went for my walk, taking photo's of random flies (as the dragonflies seem to have vanished) and I spot something odd... creeping closer I recognised it immediately!

Here he is looking over his shoulder(?) to see what I am up to.

After the first flash, he made a run for it:

Rather helpfully putting any question as to his gender to rest...

After poking around the leaves for a bit, he seemed resigned to his 5 minutes of fame and posed for a few more shots:

Sadly that's all the time I could afford to spend with him, but managed to grab a generic flesh fly shot along the way as well:

Can't wait for that ringflash to arrive, it's a pain in the proverbials lining up a potentially great shot, only for a leaf or something to get in the way of the flash at the wrong moment, messing it up.

Excellent job, Ash!
The head shot of the fly is awesome.

Very nice shots! Those scorpion flies are certainly odd looking - love the shots of them. The head shot of the other fly is a bit closer than I like flies to be, frankly.

Good shots Ash ! Certainly it's a subject you'd want to spend a little longer with given the opportunity.

Thanks all!

Sadly stuck at home for the next 2 days due to childcare commitments so won't be able to go out and take any photo's until Thursday, but hopefully my ringflash should arrive today or tomorrow ready for Thursday.

Sorry mtngal I know you don't like those sorts of bugs up close!

Not to worry, Ash. Switch lenses and take photos of the kids.

I try to take photo's of the nipper, but he does a very strange popeye grin at the camera whenever it's pointed in his direction. Rather like this:
