Default Here Be Dragons !

Public holiday here yesterday but instead of going to the crowded Dragon Boat races (I was keen but my wife wasn't, too hot so she decided to stay at home) I drove around to see what else of interest I could find. After two false starts (graveyards - and I had already paid my parking fees !) I found this brand new and absolutely massive Botanical Garden I'd never heard of (quite usual in Shanghai where new stuff just seems to spring up overnight) !

Beautifulluy laid out and a few huge lakes but of course most of the exhibits were new and all the trees still had supports on them - the reeds and rushes in the lakes were great though, many beds of different varieties.

I've included the frog shot just for interest - they were very shy and I had to sneak up on him and take this on my belly through the undergrowth

And ...... here be Dragons !

Would be great if anyone could identify them for me

Thank you Ronny - yes those 2 plus 2 other shots are now in 'Spectacular Insects - By Invitation Only' on Flickr ! The landscape was also invited into Best Water Reflections & Water Maniacs.

Great color and sharpness, great use of DOF and fine composition too.
Can't help you on the bird...
We have different odonate species here, but your first looks like some kind of Meadowhawk, and the second some kind of Skimmer.
You might try Odonata Central for better ID:
