Default An orchid & some "bugs"

One of my summer employees alerted me to a new orchid blooming in the park recently. Many of our native orchids are at least partly parasitic, but this is one of the few true saprophytes. It has no chlorophyll, no true leaves, and lives off of decaying things in the ground. It's always a surprise when a flower stalk of Crested Corarlroot "suddenly" appears.
Here's a view of the plant, and a closer look at some blooms:

And here are a few closer views of the blooms - sure is an odd-looking plant, isn't it?

A few new dragonfly species have been emerging recently. We've seen many Black Shouldered Spinylegs out in the damp meadows. These clubtails perch rather low, usually on horizontal leaves, and dash out to grab butterflies and such.

Also a few Fawn Darners have emerged in the past week or so. Hard to spot because they hang out in the shade, and are very shy. These are not very good photos, but the best I've gotten so far - will keep trying...

Swamp Milkweed continues to bloom in the hot wet places, and continues to draw lots of butterflies. This Great Spangled Fritillary let us get very close, until one child in the group tried to touch it!

Lots of Silvery Checkerspots out in the meadows these days, and many of them are mating.

Very interesting orchid.

Great lighting on the first Fritillary - a wall hanger if there ever was one!

Well done.
