Default Butterfly aviary

When I got to the butterfly house, I got busy talking to another photographer and was informed by my granddaughter that, I had ran out of time and they were waiting for me to hurry up and come on! Well, rushing to get a few shots I managed to get a couple that that I thought were OK considering I couldn't focus with the 55-300mm in the working distance I had.

here is a crop of the same photo, which do you prefer?

Linda got some much better shots with her K100 and kit lens. I'll post some of those later.

These are not "acceptable", you are really getting the hang on this macro stuff. #4 is for the wall! I prefer the uncropped version.

Agree with Kjell - #4 is really a lovely shot, maybe best at 8x10 and cropped a little tighter than the uncropped version but not as much as your cropped version !

A colorful selection - from the top: Monarch, Pipevine Swallowtail (twice), and sharing the flower a Queen and Zebra Heliconian (all Florida natives).

Thank you, Pen.
I wasn't sure about the swallowtail, thought maybe a black tail but, wasn't convinced.

Hi GW,

Terrific series!

On the crop, I agree with Kevin, and would have cropped to 8x10 at full height, excluding the right side where the bokeh is busier. This would give you a more Rule of Thirds composition, with the smoother bokeh to the left as an attractive background.

Nice work, John. Like #4, too. Lovely colour in the flower!

Thank you Scott and Kev.

Scott, are we talking vertical or horizontal crop?

Never have been very good at cropping.

These are lovely, GW. I, too, prefer the uncropped version. Although, cropped a little bit. I would think try cropping it square. Leaving a little more background on the right side than the left. Just my thought.
