Default Stinky Beetle & Friends

Here, as for a lot of other people, it's been really hot with hardly a day under 35C and some over 40C topping out at 43C - OK to wander around the garden but that's as far as I'm going without A/C !

Took these yesterday in between playing with my dog (don't envy her at all in her fur coat - we actually bring her in to sit by the back door now as it's too hot for her outside. She loves it though as she gets to see what's going on indoors for a change) !

Can't decide if the beetle is pretty or ugly. There's elements of both with it. Good shots! I'm sure I'll be grumbling about the heat in at least by next month if not before, but it's been a very comfortable summer so far. Rather grey at work (marine layer has been in most mornings, not usual for August).

very nice shots! To me this thing is very cool looking, Im not sure I would use pretty because it 's contrasting coarse hairs, rugged body, and bright pattern definitely dont seem femenine enough to use such word ( for me being a male I suppose) If this beetle were a car, It'd be a hummer, (probably an H2 with flames by the obnoxious paint on the back!)

Its back reminds me something of a Roman shield. It is amazing how evolution creates such patterns.

Far more interesting that the stink bugs we have around here, but definitely a relation. Really like the control of DOF on the fly.

Your first and last pics are outstaning IMO. The last shows what a handsome fellow he is.

Thank you Harriett - I've decided it's pretty ... from a distance !

Thanks NMR - the Hummer analogy is apt as it maneuvers in a similar manner, and I've often thought these bugs look like shields, I remember one from when I lived in Africa, nearly 20 yrs ago, that had what looked like a mask on it's back .... I've got a photo of it somewhere.

Cheers Paul !

Thank you for your kind comments Paul !

Thanks John - I'm doing my best with A/Cs .... and plenty of fruit ices (Coconut & Mango being my favourite) !
