Default Up, Up And Away!

Last Saturday morning I Left the house at 3:45AM, picked up my Neighbor and drove 1-1/2 hour to Pittsfield, New Hampshire for a Balloon fest. We met up with members of our Camera club and set up our tripods on a bridge over the Suncook River.

The balloonists try to descend to the river and just touch their basket in the river and then lift off again. The prevailing wind was not favorable and you can see in one photo a pilot came down quite low but did not touch the water.

The sky was not good but I did the best I could. They had night activities but I could not stay for them. They tether the balloons and allow you to photograph them up close while they keep the burners lit. Great for using the Sigma 10-20. There's always next year!

Photos were taken with K-7 and Tamron 18-250, and Tokina 80-400.

You are lucky...I've always wanted to attend one of these. There is an event held locally which they call a ballon glow: evening event where they fire up the burners and make the balloons glow. But I hear it i really crowded.

That last image is a postcard!

Thanks all! I did enjoy this shoot a lot. I am sure I will go back again next year and stay all day and into the night for those tethered shots (Balloon Glow, as Jehan called it).

I think they fly at both dawn and Dusk. The area around Pittsfield was settled in the 1600's and is very charming and loaded with Photo opportunities.

What a wonderful day! I love the pictures, like others I'd love to photograph an event like this. You did very well with these, some are really, really creative (the reflection one) - such fun.

Thanks Harriet. It was indeed a fun day. The colors were great and the motion was nice and slow. If only more drama in the sky behind the balloons!
