Default No sunrise, just rainfall

Got to attend a meeting at Roan Mt State Park last week, and planned to get there a few hours early, to hike on up the Mt for some sunrise photos.
Well, I did arrive with plenty of time to greet the sunrise, but was greeted by somewhat different weather...

It started (predawn) as just fog & wind, but soon became heavy rain. Had a great, wet hike but could not take many photos (I may be weather-resistant, but K-M is not!)

Did get a few photos in a spot sheltered from the wind & rain. These were done intentionally a bit soft, to accentuate the fog & rain mood. Do they seem too soft to you?

After almost two hours of fun, soggy hiking, the rains slacked off and we got some fine views across the nearby ridges.

Nearly all of these were taken with my new (old & used) Pentax A 35-105 F3.5. Did not want to change lenses in the rain, so tried one pano shot to get a wider angle. What do you think of it?

And, with all the talk here lately about HDR, I decided to try a few. Here are two examples, with & without HDR (will post a third at the "monthly challenge")
Have never had much luck with HDR before, and not sure if these are OK or maybe too unrealistic. Would appreciate any critique!

Got to the meeting just in time, but rather damp. Will try for sunrise another, DRIER day!

Thanks for any critique and comments!

A wonderful series! How I would love to see your ridges like that. I like your HDR pictures, the first one is really lovely. I'm not as crazy about the sky in the second one - it processed it a bit too dark (quite a few of the HDR software programs do that, making skies look "muddy" than they should). You can always merge the sky you like with the HDR to keep all the rest of it. I also like the moodiness of your fog and ferns pictures, very appropriate. If anyone needs weather sealing, you sure do.

Some spectacular views Mole !

I really like your HDR versions, it brings out the detail in the shadows and the sky gives them an almost 'Japanese' feel to them as often seen in some of their cartoons (meant in a good way) !

Very nice HDR shots. I like the vibrant look in the second one best.

I really like the way your HDR shots turned out, Mole.
It always amazes me how you can make any weather condition look like fun!
