just put the camera to single point AF, and focus off the leaves, and you still can use the evaluative meter, or you can switch to center weight or spot metering. I do not remember exactly. As I do not have my brothers camera in front of me. But I believe one of the direction keys puts you right into the metering option.

Yes, focus and meter then lock both with the AE-AF lock button and then compose and shoot. Thanks for the help shoturtle
