thanks for the info snostorm but I just recently got the tamron 300 sp 2.8 with the adapter included and a tamron 2x sp TC so the adapter doesnt need to be purchased, Im not sure if id have to want to throw the tc on however just to get 1:1

I already have a few nice portrait lenses, so Im not sure if it'd get much use for that but I do apreciate the info, good stuff

About rationalizing lens purchases, well thats probably why I have 7 50mm's

Just to follow up on what Scott has said there is a very cheap way to get 1:1 with the old Tamron macros and that is to buy an 'ugly' grade Adaptall 2x tc and remove the glass. I paid $6 for mine at KEH. Actually took the glass out and cleaned it and it would be serviceable if i was desperate but as an extension tube it is perfect. Gives me 1:1 with the 35-80 SP so I'm sure the same idea would work on the 90/2.5.

You have all you need to do 1;1 with the 90/2.5 Just unscrew the glass elements from the 2x and you have a 45mm extension tube. When you want it to be a TC again just screw the glass back in. Tamron made it super easy to do this, thankfully.
