Default Downloadable software

Can someone point me to a downloadable developer for the Pentax RAW files? I looked on Pentaximaging and don't see anything but I assume Penatx offers one. Am I right? Thanks.

There's Pentax Camera Utility 4 which should be on a CD in the camera box, but after the last firmware update it won't view PEF files properly from my K-7.

I use GIMP now, that can handle PEF/RAW files with no issues, and has some pretty decent noise reduction capabilities.

Not exactly full featured but Picasa from Google seems to keep up with the latest Pentax formats and does a decent job of basic development. I use it for web based work and most smaller prints.

So Pentax doesn't offer anything for it's users to download? That seems kinda poor, considering Olympus offers a full featured developer for free as long you have a DSLR serial number. I figured they all did that. Makes buying a used K100 a bit more tricky.

It's annoying that the upgrade to v4.11 is all that's available to download; I managed to obtain a copy of V4 via the Pentax User Forum & applied the upgrade.

Mail me if you'd like to download v4 & give it a try

You will fine the Codec for Windows, that will allow you to use softwrae that base on Windows Codecs installed on your PC and not develop by a software company, like Adobe with Adobe Camara raw.

http://www.pentaximaging.com/support...nd-literature/

Click on DOWNLOAD WINDOWS VISTA/7 32 BIT RAW CODEC (8.59 MB)

And install it.

But, Pentax doesn't offer 64 bit codecs yet. So, if you're using 64 bit Win 7 or Vista (and most newer PCs ship with 64 bit Win 7 now), you're out of luck with the Pentax provided codecs.

If you really want Windows Explorer to be able to display your images and you're using 64 bit Win 7 or Vista, there is a good third party codec you can use. But, it's no longer free as it once was. See here:

BTW, in addition to the already mentioned Google Picasa (free), here are a few more free products you may want to try that can handle most raw files:

FastStone Image Viewer

Raw Therapee

UFRaw (works as a stand alone, or as a plug in for The Gimp

Photoscape

I use FastStone as my default pictuer browser...it does it all..browse, resize, edit, batch processing (i.e. rename). slide show. Handles RAW and TIFF. Great product IMHO!
