Sorry, I use Picasa for viewing RAW files, not sure if it works on DNG since I was only using PEF.

How are you doing, Roy? I think Picasa works with dng files, since it's what I use mostly and I remember I had thumbnails, but it's been a long time since I played around with it. I primarily use Bridge if I want to briefly scroll through a folder or CD. Since I switched to Mac, I haven't had that problem - dng thumbnails show up but they are so small you can't tell anything from them.

Windows Explorer, huh? What Windows version?

One alternative that lets you view your DNG files from Windows Explorer is the FastPictureViewer codec pack. It integrates via the Windows Image Component (WIC) library (already installed if you have XP SP3, Vista or Win 7). It's no longer free, but it's relatively inexpensive at $14.99:

http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/

If you're still using XP and have SP3 installed, it should work. Ditto if you're using Win 7 or Vista (either 32 bit or 64 bit versions). But, if you're still on XP SP2 for some reason and can't install Service Pack 3 (which includes the WIC libraries), you'll need to install the Windows Imaging Component libraries first (you'll see link to them on the FastPictureviewer codec pack page). Here's a direct link to that page. The English version is the third download on the page. Then, the FastPictureViewer codecs will work with XP SP2:

If you're using 32 bit Windows or Vista, you may want to see if the Pentax raw codec works with DNG (since it's free). But, AFAIK, it won't work with XP, and it won't work with 64 bit versions of Windows (the FastPictureViewer codecs do):

you may have to change the extention name.. google will not accept .exe files..

Here's a direct link to the Pentax raw codec installer:

http://www.pentax.jp/english/support..._Raw_Codec.exe

But, note that it will only work with 32 bit Windows Vista or Windows 7, and I don't know if it will work with dng files (you'll have to try it to see).

It's not designed to work with XP at all, and it won't work with 64 bit versions of Vista or Windows 7 (Pentax has not released any 64 bit codecs yet).

BTW, if you dig around with Google, some sites still have the older versions of the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack online, which was "donationware" at one time (free to download, with the author asking only for a donation). Here's one example:

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil..*****iption.html

But, Axel (the program author) discontinued the free versions later, since he saw loads of downloads with very few people making donations for his efforts. See more about that here:

http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/#freeversion

If you decide to use them, I'd make a donation to the author. Or, better yet, purchase the new version for $14.99. ;-)
