Default just a sea gull

Was playing around with the k-x the other day, and snap this series with the kit len 55-300. It was not great lighting, most of last week. A SDM 70-300mm zoom would be a nice lens for pentax to come out with. Giving it a bit fast AF.

These are nice photos. The DA 55-300 is reputed to be very sharp, but some reviewers have complained of sluggish autofocus. However, it appears that your lens had no trouble keeping up with this fast moving subject. I wonder if a levels adjustment would help the bird stand out more strongly against the background.

First one looks quite good, the others not bad at all. I agree that lightening the bird a bit might help it stand out better, wouldn't be hard to do. Why do you think a 70-300 would do better than the 55-300?

Just uses to a canon 70-300 USM lens, while the 55-300 is not bad and can work. A 70-300 or a 55-300 sdm would be better for action. That is all.

You did very well. Wish I could get BIF's that sharp!

Hi shoturtle,

Nicely done!

I don't think we'll see any new SDM lenses though -- I think that DC motors like the one in the new DA 18-135 are going to be the future for in-lens focusing motors for Pehtax. If the rumors are true, and Pentax is using the relatively recent patent I've seen in this motor, then I wouldn't be surprised to see DC variants of the current SDM lenses and only DC motors in new lenses. I like screw drive though, and truly hope that they'll consider dual drive for bodies and lenses into the forseeable future.

Thanks guys, I could have chose a white and gray gull over a brown one with the brown back ground. Was not really thinking. It would have stand out better, and if I had better light, the shoot might have pop a bit more.

I will consider playing with the levels after I get back form my trip.

Scott,

Thanks for the AF motor info. The DA 55-300 is not bad, a little more speed would be helpful that is all.

But overall, for the price the dal 55-300 is a great value with good performance. It is no slouch for shooting bif's. It can almost keep up with my canon ef 70-300 IS USM lens
