Default Really long shot

In a semi sober moment I just sent this message to Pentax Canada, wow am I delusional or what?

I am currently in Tuktoyaktuk, NWT, Canada (see http://aicphotography.blogspot.com/2...-in-paper.html ) and I am offering my services to do winter testing on the new K5 or KR cameras (yes I am looking for a free camera, the difference is I am willing to work for it). I have used Pentax cameras since I purchased my ME Super in 1981, since then I have owned two K1000s a used KX film model, an SF-1, an MZ-7, a *ist DL, a *ist DS, a K10D ( with minor focusing issues) and a K100D Super which I bought for my wife Annette. Pentax has served me well, and I was a winner of an FA 50mm f1.4 lens from the opening of the Pentaxian website.
Tuktoyaktuk (or Tuk for short) is an Inuvialuit community on the Beaufort Sea of the Arctic Ocean. It is the northernmost community of its size (about 940 people) on the mainland of Canada. It has been visited by Sheryl Crow and Metallica for special concerts and was featured in season two of “Ice Road Truckers” and an episode of “Jesse James is a Dead Man” because of the ice road down the MacKenzie River from Inuvik. Just last year there were articles in car magazines about a Jeep model and two Smart cars which were tested in severe conditions by driving to Tuk on the ice road.
I would really like the opportunity to try out the new Pentax models under these conditions, from shooting ice fishing at Husky Lakes to drum dancing at Kiti Hall I could report on the low temperature and high ISO performance of these models under extreme conditions. It is unlikely that you will get an opportunity to do this type of testing at no more cost to you than to lend a camera and ship it to Tuk.
I have been a very loyal Pentax user because Pentax is about photography, not technological bragging rights. I am a member of one of the most active forums at Steve’s Digicams http://forums.steves-digicams.com/pe...msung-dslr-73/ and have recently had an image accepted to the Pentax Photo Gallery http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/iracrummey .
I admit that the prospect of testing the latest technology from Pentax is my biggest motivation in making this request but in my defense I must point out that, in spite of no formal photographic training I have been instrumental in starting a photography club in Gander Newfoundland and have made Pentaxians of at least four other people. This may sound like rather small items but to me they have been a significant part of my adult life since this has been my creative release for nearly thirty years.
Please give this some consideration.

Maybe not such a long shot - as you say nothing to lose but the loan of a camera or two for a couple of months or so.

Good luck with your offer Ira !

Hmmm... I wonder what the chances of testing one in the rugged humid swamplands of Florida would be?

Good luck Ira.

Cold weather shows are very popular...Ice Road truckers...the other show about flying. It would be harder to find a colder climate than Tuk and having an advanced amateur user like you....put a K5 through the cold weather wringer and survive, could be a good advert and , more important good cold weather testing for a camera billed as an outdoor, robust camera.

You also need to acquire some new WR Pentax lenses for this test.

Another argument in you favour, is the fact that you are a teacher and I'm sure the student body would follow your test with great interest.

In fact you could probably rig up video taken by the K5, on outdoor winter, class outings (just get appropriate permission forms signed by parent / guardians ) in environs. Isn't Tuk on the coast of the Arctic Ocean ?

Another educator bonus...is that as an experienced teacher you know and have much experience in determining valid goals, then documenting and objectively assessing whether these goals have been achieved.

All this is imminently transferable to your potential testing role for Pentax.

I hope this works for you. I recall the positive advertising BMW motorcycles got when they supplied a couple of their bikes to Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman on their films about motorcycle treks through difficult terrain.

I don't know how a larger company like Pentax values user field testing, but as an engineer in an industry where such testing is extremely valuable, I love your request. I hope they follow up with this one.

My fingers are crossed. If this message makes it to the right people I have a chance. Thanks for the encouragement.

Good luck with this. You have made a number of valid points. I've always wanted to ask one or two car companies about offering my services as a tester - if a car can make it through 5 years of my daily commute and be economical, it would be something to brag about (75 miles one way, 5,700 feet elevation change). But then I figure everyone up here thinks the same and I'm sure others have already tried it and been turned down (auto manufacturers do have their own testing facilities in lots of odd, extreme locations).

Perhaps if I send this message every day... Oh well, let's see if they respond.
