Default Pinnacle Mt Trail

The US Forest Service just recently opened a new trail up the Unicoi County side of Buffalo Mt. So of course I had to check it out!

It's a fine little 4.6 mile trail up the mountain, mostly through younger woodlands of White Pines and various Oak species.

No blooms this time of year, although it looked like a great place for late spring wildflowers (lots of rhododendrons and mt laurels). But it was rich with some interesting fungus! (which view do you prefer?)

This fine young woodland was also rich in wild grape vines. The grapes are already past peak and dropping. We saw many chipmunks enjoying the grapes (no photos - my dogs kept chasing them away!), and grape seeds in the bear droppings too.

Of course, the big attraction of mt hikes this time of year is the views. Since most leaves are down, there are more open views of the surrounding hills. Here are some cloudier views...

The trail ends at the old Pinnacle Fire Tower. Only part of the tower is there now, but there are some plans, as funding permits, to restore the tower and allow folks up in it again...

Would have loved to stay up at the top to watch the sunrise, but not too confident hiking a new trail in the dark. So we headed back down - the dogs were very glad that at least one mt spring was still running well!

Got back to the trailhead just in time to enjoy a lovely moonlit dusk.

Hoping to return to this fine little trail in the spring, to check for some of the unique Buffalo Mt flora. Also hoping you enjoyed our stroll, and will share some comments & critique!

Always love your hikes and this is no exception. I can't pick a favorite - of the mushrooms I like the third one only because it captured a little more of the underside of the mushroom on the right, and I love their fins. Of the last two, I can't make a choice, love them both. The bare trees are so delicate.

Just great.....wonderful pictures, as per usual. Your depth of field and clarity are exceptional.

All taken with a K2000 ?
