First is indeed a great capture of a tough subject. Second has some really fine texture and detail on another rather difficult type of subject - neither macro nor landscape, but something between... Perhaps, as GW said, moving so the trunk is a bit more to the right would emphasize the curves of the tree better. Maybe also moving a bit further away to get more of the lines of the branches?
