Default K5 Arrived This Week

I was going to wait till prices came down more. I lucked out and found on line for $1409.00, won't list store since next day their price went up by $90.00. Haven't been able to test in my favorite locations yet. worked with in home and getting settings the way I want them. Impressions are faster focus and better high ISO, nothing scientific (gut feel), I do not fiddle around with testing thoroughly. When focusing out a window the focus sometimes locked on the somewhat dirty window rather then what I was trying to focus on in the distance. Never remember this happening with former cameras. Took K5 to park across the street. conditions were clouded over after 4:30pm. Set to TaAv so high ISO would result. Posting photos taken with DA* 300mm. Set here is as extracted by my JPEG from Raw program that extracts the imbedded JPEG (allows to avoid shooting Raw + jpeg). The set I am posting here are only downsized for the forum. Will post the photos processed from Raw in Photoshop in reply.

Squirrel 1/800 sec., f6.3, ISO 6400
Seagull 1/1000 sec., f7.1, ISO 2000
Soccer 1/1000 sec., f7.1, ISO 5000
Ibis Flock 1/1000 sec., f7.1, ISO 1000

Congrats on the new camera! Love your two birds, looks like you'll have fun with the camera.

I've occasionally had trouble with the camera focusing on a dirty window, but most often when I'm trying to shoot through a windshield. The soccer picture at ISO 5000 is quite something, though it does look like there's some noise reduction going on in-camera. But ISO 5,000 seems impossible - even with noise reduction ISO 2000 isn't this good with the K7. I like the detail/lightening you were able to do with the ibis flock, very nice.

the squirl looks a bit soft in the first and a bit to sharp in the second, but shows clearly the quality of the high iso's.
the other ones are as good as possible

I'm still adjusting to the fact that higher iso settings are possible, and still have to change my way of thinking when I can get a good picture.

congrats with your camera.

Congrat's...!

Looks like you were able to bring out a lot of detail from the RAW, especially
with the two BIF images...

Nice goin, Ed.
The IQ of the K5 at high ISO is impressive!
I think that's what I'm going to spend this years tax return on.

Quite impressive. On my monitor the processed squirrel does look over done. But, the others are great.

"Set here is as extracted by my JPEG from Raw program that extracts the imbedded JPEG (allows to avoid shooting Raw + jpeg)."

I thought I used to have two programs that allowed me to easily convert from JPEG to RAW without going through Elements, but can't find them. What program did you use? Actually, I think one of the ones I had was recommended by you years ago.

Thanks, Patty

I am using DNG raw, not sure what Pentax cameras are covered in native raw. Photoshop does not cover the K5 native file yet, DNG works great. For a while when I upgraded my computer to 64bit I did not have use of the program. They now have a 64bit version.
