Default Just scored a *ist DL

Okay, so I don't need it but since my son's DS was stolen and I gave him my DL I have missed it. I have a soft spot for the silver bodied DL that was sold here in Canada so when I saw one reasonably priced on Ebay I took a shot at it. It cost me about $180, shipping included, not cheap but reasonable. I am hoping that it is in good shape (it does have the original box, usually a good sign).

Next will be a focusing screen for my K10D I hope.

I also got two lenses and some accessories, for about $100 I got an FA 28-105mm f3.2-4.5 IF AL (in silver finish) and an FAJ 75-300mm f4.5-5.8, plus a wireless remote and wired remote. I have read some good things about the 28-105 and even the 75-300 seems like a usable lens (and much lighter than my F 100-300mm f4.5-5.6).

Any comments on these lenses?

No comments about the lenses (don't have either one) but the remotes are wonderful to have. I don't use mine that often, but am SO grateful I have them when I do. That's a purchase I've never regretted, even though it was somewhat impulsive and "gee, I think I should have one" type of thing.

Well after doing some reading (and from some personal experience) I think the new purchases will give me a few new capabilities.

The FA 28-105mm will give me a faster zoom (at 3.2 on the wide end it is almost as fast as the Sigma I recently sold but much lighter), and will be a great companion to the DL as a low light camera (RAW files from a DL, shot at ISO 3200 clean up very nicely, that 6MP Sony sensor is like Kodachrome film, a classic). The lens still has the factory hood, and is in the same silver colour as the DL, which is very discrete these days since black cameras make you look like a serious photographer while other colours let people ignore you.

The FAJ 75-300mm may not be Pentax's best built lens but it is very compact and lightweight compared to the F 100-300mm. It also appears to be its equal for image quality so the F may find itself sent back to Gander in favour of the lighter, closer focusing FAJ.

I hope to receive the DL within a week or so while the lenses will not reach me until March so this thread will be revived only after I have had a chance to try out these new toys by mid March.

Nice purchase. I can say I wouldn't mind still having my old *istDL as a 2nd body. But it's in good hands with my sister so I'm cool with it.

I still somewhat regret selling the DS, even if I did sell it to a good home. And I have no intention of selling the K100. It still gets used on occasion and whenever I do, I'm always pleased with the quality.

Default It's here

I really enjoy the DL, it is slow, the viewfinder is not that great, it is only 6MP, changing the batteries requires a degree of manual dexterity and the silver colour is very unprofessional, in other words "Perfect".

Remember that my fun car is a 1999 V6 Mustang, a 90's body on a 70s chassis that was only fair at best, I love that too. Sometimes things that are too perfect seem sterile and clinical, I now have the imperfect FA 50mm f1.4 mated with the even more imperfect *istDL (even the name is extremely imperfect) and I am loving it. The K10D with the two WR lenses will be my outdoor kit but for those events at school and at the local hall the DL with either the FA50 or the FA 28-70mm f4 will likely be my (lightweight) companion.

Here is my creative self portrait with the DL, shot at 800ISO in RAW and processed in Picasa with fine tuning in PSE6 (didn't use ACR on this one, but will in future).

Consider this thread finished.
