Default The Heron Colony

K5 & DA*300 / ISO200 - 400 / F5.6 to 8 / 1/800 (nest) to 1/2000 (BIF shots). Hand-held and panned.

I've been trying to get these little b^%*%s for a while ! Now they are nesting it's much easier to get settled maybe 50m from the colony and wait for them to fly over me.

Hi Kevin,

These are really outstanding -- every one of them!!!!!

I doubt that I'll ever come close to any of these. The only times I see these guys, they're fishing, and the only time I've seen them flying -- it's because I screwed up and startled them so they're flying away. . .

Looks like you'll have a good season's worth of shooting and watching the development of the young ones. Apparently there are rookeries in my area, and I've found a few for the Great Blue Heron, but I haven't found any for the BCNH yet.

Very nice work.

Scott

Very nice Kevin...love the light coming though the wing spread in #1. Nice composition on # 1 as well. How muc of a crop was this image vs. the original?

Really outstanding. Number one is a favorite as is the "family" picture with the nest. Nice work.

What a great series of photos of some very hard to photograph birds! Must agree with the great light on #1, also great action photos of carrying nesting material, and that fine golden glow on the nesting pair...
Looking forward to seeing more great photos as the season progresses!

Thank you Scott - that means a lot coming from you especially. Until I saw this rookery I had had the same experience ... either they were wading too far off or I disturbed them and my BIF shot would be of it's backside !

Thanks Jehan ! The crop on #1 is the smallest of them all, the shot is about 50% whereas with the others between 1/6 and 1/10 of the frame.

Thank you Dave !

Thanks Seaain - glad you enjoyed them !

Thank you Mole ! I plan to go back often so hopefully we'll get to see lots of chick shots (!) and even some of them learning to fly. Fingers crossed.

Kevin nice shots I agree #1 is great, looks like you will have more chances during the season, good luck with future shots. I also have not had any luck with the smaller heron's and my chances are ending today, back to snow and grey skies until spring hits Michigan.
