Yes indeed, I used my ancient ringflash (on full power as it's either that or the rubbish photodiode "Auto" setting) and usually between f/18 and f/22 at 1/160 (only way the flash will fire)

This usually gives you a nice dark background, and playing with the black point or levels can reduce any background detail a bit more.

Re-took the eye/knot photo, went wider and managed to get a sharper image (despite it blowing a gale and me having to hold the branch in one hand and shoot with the other)



I also prefer the background on this one.

Yes, definitely better. I can relate to that, seeing as how I spent yesterday trying to shoot wildflowers in high winds. Good job!
