Default Northern Flicker Update

Last week I posted the nest of a Northern Flicker Woodpecker in Green Cay Wetlands. Yesterday I saw the bird around the hole in the palm tree again. Again too shy to get great photos. The tree the bird is in is a Strangler Fig. It has already killed the Palm Tree the Flickers nest is in. The strangler fig uses another tree as host, growing on the tree and sending roots to the ground around the host. Eventually the host dies and leaves just the Strangler Fig engulfing it. About five feet below the Flicker nest is an old woodpecker hole that has been taken over by Bees (last photo).

About sixty feet (10 meters) from the Flicker nest I located the nest of a Red-bellied Woodpecker. That bird was less shy, posting photos on another thread.

Great shots despite the difficult lighting. Thanks for keeping us posted!
