Default What Is Woodpecker Doing?

In this sequence this Red-bellied Woodpecker seems to have it's belly distended. The bird keeps looking down at its belly. Any woodpecker experts that may know what it is doing?

I'm not an expert by any means. Could it be laying an egg or something, maybe? Neat photos, in any case.

This is a male, so it isn't pulling feathers to prepare a brood patch for incubation. I'd guess something is bothering it, maybe a flea, louse or some other parasite. Just a guess.

Edit: I see in your other thread that he has been in the nest cavity (excavating?), so it could be that his feathers became disarranged (which would be uncomfortable) and he is just preening.
