Default Back to Roan Mt for the Grays Lilies

July is a "wild and crazy" month in our Tennessee State Parks, so not much time for visiting here. But of course always some time to enjoy the great Tennessee outdoors! Went back up to Roan Mt about a week ago, to enjoy a good hike and to check on the rare Grays Lilies.

It was a fine sunny bright day in the mountains, not the best conditions for flower photography, but great for walking across the high country!

Roan is lovely in the grand views, and also in the details. Here is a little Junco who came begging for crumbs, and some ferns and Michaux's Saxifrage in a tiny rock crevice.

Another view of Michaux's Saxifrage and three other high country endemics - Mountain St Johnswort, Mountain Cranberry, and False Hellebore.

We did find an abundance of Gray's Lily! This rare lily is only found in a few spots in the high country of the Southern Appalachians, and is very "picky" about its growing conditions. Thanks to some very hard-working folks in the Southern Appalachian Plant Society, the lily's habitat is being protected, and we can enjoy seeing it in bloom...

We found one plant with 5 blooms near Jane Bald. Sadly, when we were passing the same spot on the way back several hours later, we noticed that someone had broken off the entire blooming stalk....

Despite the sadness of this one act of vandalism, we did enjoy a fine hike back down the mountain, with more great views of the highlands of the Roan.

Thanks for posting these wonderful pictures. That is really a lovely mountain. It's sad that people don't follow the simple rule of "take nothing but memories, and leave nothing but footprints". (Think that's how it goes.) I'm spending a couple of months in central WA viiting with my son & grandson, and we have spent a lot of time hiking. We've noticed a fair amount of trash being left on some of the trails, and damage to trees and plants. I have no idea why people do things like this. Anyway, I enjoy your "travel" threads.
