Default Most Used Lens Survey 2011 - The Results !

I conducted a survey on a couple of popular dedicated Pentax forums recently - on the UK PU forum and on the US based PF forum thinking it would add to the viability of the survey if I aggregated the results from the two forums. So here they are. Sometimes there was a surprising difference between the predominantly UK user forum and that of the predominantly American user forum.

The survey was 'Your Most Used Lenses' (as opposed to your favourites).

Secondly let me say that I take no responsibility for any mathematical or systemic errors. The survey is what it is, just a bit of fun borne out of an interest as to which lenses we get the most use out of. Also note that the lenses listed in each table are those I think are the best fit to the title (e.g. DFA*100 macro has not been included in the table of Top Telephoto lenses as to me it's primary function is not as a telephoto even though it may sometimes be used for that function) sorry if your viewpoint is different

Thirdly - The way I calculated the scoring was 5 points for a lens in your lists in top place, down to 1 point for a lense in 5th place. Averaged points, for those who didn't give them positions, and only the top 5 of lenses used on digital cameras, were used where people gave more than one list. In some cases I just had to make an educated guess. More than 200 lenses were listed.

Finally there are two results for each table, the first is an aggregate of the results from two forums (184 respondents lists were aggregated, from the PF and PU forums) and the second is the results of the PF forum only.

Hope you enjoy these tables and that it encourages debate, discussion or comment as much as I enjoyed reading the lists of lenses you posted.

Thank you !
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Just confirms what an oddball I am -- but I already knew that!

Glad you had fun with this, but it would have driven me nuts -- I find most photo forum members usually answer posts to make their own point rather than to answer the OP's question, so it must have been a nightmare to try to compile this.

Great work! A whole bunch of surprises for me as a long time Pentax forum reader though. . .

Great work!

Not surprised to see the Tamron 90mm series fare so highly, but surprised to see the 18-55WR (and variants) fare so badly in all but the WR chart. I always found it perfectly acceptable, although I admit have never given serious consideration to other lenses in the same range due to the quality (and cost)

Thank you Hans !

Thanks Scott. Actually compiling wasn't a problem (until people started giving me lists for their digital + for their film + for their MF + for their AF (you get the picture) but I got a lot of flak on one forum where some posters didn't believe the Top 20-30 were actually the Top 20-30. They figured people were lying about which lenses they actually possess (even though most of them have them listed in their signatures) !

Personally I think the people that inhabit forums tend to be rather more interested in the technical aspects, rather more committed to photography in general and rather more likely to not only buy better lenses because of the aforementioned but actually use them .. than your average DSLR buyer who buys a kit with two lenses and then probably nothing else (and this isn't at all meant in a disparaging way).

Thank you Ash ! re. 18-55, I think it done rather well actually (4th Overall, 3rd in the Zooms and 2nd in Wide Angles) especially when you consider my comments just above as a possible consideration ? It doesn't surprise me to see the Tamron 90 doing so well - such a great lens !

OMG you know what? I missed it in some of the charts, that will teach me to try reading with only 4 hours sleep in 2 days...

An interesting list. I have quite a few of those top lenses and wish I had one or two that are on the list.

I agree with you that people who frequent photo boards are more likely to own and use better lenses. Some of my purchases have been because I hang around here too much, I think. Guess I fit right in with everyone else, as right now the FA 31 is rarely off my camera...

Fascinating list - thanks for all the time and effort behind it!
So glad that I have no funds for lens purchases right now... so I can't be tempted...

I have the Sigma 30/1.4 and, like your 31, it is now my go to lens. Just a wonderful lens and a very useful FL.
