Default Lost flsh cap - hurt water resistence ?

So not even having the camera for a few months, I lost the cap for the hot shoe. my son threw it away thinking it was trash.

Do I need one to protect the camera in the rain and snow or is leaving it off an option.

Anyone know?

Not to worry. There is no entrance for water from the hot shoe to the inside of the body. The cap is only there to keep dust and dirt away from the contacts, it's not very important. I used my Program A/Program Plus body for 20 years without a hot shoe cap. We even went to war together (literally)! First time I saw a hot shoe cap and realized they exist, was when I bought my first digital body (*ist DS). If the contacts do get dirty, you can wipe them with a piece of cloth. They are not sensitive to scratches.

Hi Bowenp,

I completely agree with Kjell. None of my DLSR's have them and though I don't normally shoot in the rain, I'm not at all concerned by this when I do get caught out in a sudden storm. I do, freak out about my non WR lenses though, and keep a supply of the tubes that stores give away for carrying wet umbrellas in my camera bag to protect them in that eventuality. I also have a few of the conical ones that florists use to keep bouquets from leaking for my bigger glass.

That cap is the first thing I remove, I normally stick it to the door of the cupboard where I keep my photographic stuff. So now I 3 caps sticked there. Never had any problems with the contacts.

So don't worry
