My only complaint about the full frame cameras I've looked at is that they are so heavy. Add in a VR fast zoom and forget about me trying to hand-hold anything. You wouldn't be so hampered, so perhaps it would be a good idea for you. If you can get it for under market value, you can always sell it on if it doesn't work out for you.

This could put the DA* on the back burner for a while (I will not leave Pentax, just reevaluate which camera system best suits which type of shooting). Just thought I would share this now, it is only a very slight chance but one I would go for if it does happen.
I would jump all over that Ira ! The D700 is on my list for a dual system (2xK5s and a D700 is the long term target).

Ha ha. It's just ignorance Patty. Most CaNikon shooters don't know how good the K5 is, how many awards or 5 star/gold star rankings it's achieved .... or that it blows most of the top CaNikon APS-C and even some FF cameras away when using DR, High ISO and + Low Noise as markers. To say nothing of it's WR and SR !

I use www.snapsort.com to compare cameras - their winner isn't always the one I'd choose but as they summarise the advantages of each one over the other then you can see which one best suits your requirements.

e.g. Snapsort gives the Nikon D7000 a 100-97 (incredible scores) advantage over the K5 - but based mainly on video qualities, more lenses available and more AF points. However the K5 wins on all the important (to me) areas of better ; DR, IQ, Shutter lag, high ISO, faster, thinner, lighter and has SR and WR !(and better build quality which isn't considered) ! I stil don't see how the Nikon won that !!

Against the D700 the K5 wins 95 - 73 but again we all know that FF cameras (and especially the D700) have other qualities over APS-C cameras.

Yep, the thing is about 2 years ago I was standing with her when she asked one of the "professionals" in our group what she should look for in getting her first SLR. She went with what he said. I don't remember which, but he had a definite opinion on the other one. And, Pentax....well, he clamped up on his opinion when I said I had Pentax.

I would never take a D7000 over a K5, I have used both and except for the dual SD slots it is all advantage K5. I wouldn't be shooting video anyway so that is a pointless argument to me. The D700 however is a very different story, big beautiful pixels with no nonsense.

I still say there may be a K5 in my future.
