Default San Disk SD cards

I was looking around to get a 16GB card for my K5. I had settled on the San Disk Extreme HDVideo 30MB/s, class 10 card. But, then I found a San Disk Extreme III 30MB/s, class 10 card. I had a little chat with the San Disk people about the difference and discovered another little tidbit.

First, he told me that the Extreme III are basically the older version of HDVideo ones.

What he pointed out to me is to watch for a little Roman I in the SDHC image. He said that indicates the card is UHS-1 compatible. He sent me this link to explain it - http://shop.sandisk.com/DRHM/store?A...oryID=51956100

Don't know that it's going to make any difference for me, but figured I'd share my new knowledge on the different cards. This is not such an easy task trying to buy a card.

Hi Patty,

I'd buy the older Extreme III if there's any price savings. The UHS-1 compatibility would only help in downloading times to the computer (probably only if you have a compatible card reader) because none of the Pentax cameras support UHS for writing image files to the card IIRC.

Memory card mfgs seem to delight in making it hard to choose the proper card for a given application. The "ClassX" speed rating system is particularly offensive AFAIC for digital camera users since most have write speed capabilities considerably above their highest "class" (10).

They were all three between ~$26 and $28 on B&H, Best Buy and Amazon. So, I'm going to just get the UHS-1 as I have a few other things in my cart at Amazon right now.

They do make it tough to be able to compare not only between brands, but in their own products. And, when I didn't know what I was looking for to start with it made it even tougher. I know that I was using some Class 4 cards about a year ago in my K20 and it had taken a good 5 minutes to process some images I had taken when out with Lou. I had walked to the car, packed up my tripod and my bag and it still hadn't finished processing some HDR images I'd taken.

I'm using the Sandisk Extreme that's UHS-1, but they were on sale when I bought them last spring for some reason, and cheaper than the older Extreme III cards. I've been quite happy with them since previously I was using the Ultra II cards.
