Well these look good to me Mole. Nice colours, bokeh is good too and sharpness not a problem (even better, no doubt, when on a tripod).

No idea as to the lens - maybe Pentax K400/5.6 or the M42 equivalent ? If a zoom then Sigma 170-500 ?

I agree they look great, I also am looking for something a little longer for birding and am on a limited budget, what did you get

So what is this mystery lens? Your EXIFs are all at 400mm (600equiv), and file names are Tokina, so I assume it is either a Tokina 400 or an 80-400 zoom (two or three of these recently on ebay).

Kevin - Glad you enjoyed the shots. Good guess on the lens - it is indeed a 400 f5.6, but not Pentax brand.

Hans - This one was $400, a MAJOR investment for me, but one I've been searching for for some time. Looks like it will be very useful, both for work and my own pleasure. Hope you are able to find one soon.

Penolta - It is indeed the Tokina 400 F5.6 ATX AF. It's said to be one of the smallest 400mm lenses ever made (200 mm long, 79 mm diameter). It's not a macro, but is quite close focusing - 2.5 meters (about 1:5). Sigma made one that is just about a macro (maybe 1:3), but costs 2 - 3 times the price of the Tokina, and is much larger and heavier too.

PS - anyone else who has used this lens? Would be delighted to hear any experiences/suggestions/advice for best results with it. Thanks in advance!!

Great shots, lovely color and sharp detail.

Having the Tokina 80-400 and the Sigma 150-500 the weight of the 80-400 makes it a more ideal solution as a lens to hike with. The Sigma is a load to carry and far more cumbersome to hand hold. In the end though I seem to always want the extra reach of the 150-500.
