Interesting, K-5 sensor, backwards compatibility with K-mount lenses, smaller native lenses with recessed rear element.

If it doesn't look like a dogs dinner, or cost a billion dollars like the Q was at launch, this might be the new camera for me!

Strangely, the concept of this camera appeals to me to some degree. . .

If it's relatively inexpensive, it would be a relatively compact backup body for a K-5 owner, and with the 40/2.8 kit lens, it would be a pretty capable long normal people shooter with an external OVF at just about any lighting level.

I'll assume full functional compatibility (meaning including screw drive AF) with existing K mount lenses, and this model would seem to offer a reasonable tradeoff (at least for me) to the lack of compactness. If this rumor is true, it seems to me that Pentax has conceded that very compact mirrorless bodies that require entirely new lenses mounts with nearly the same size as comparable DSLR lenses really don't make that much sense (at least not to me). It will remain to be seen how well AF works with the existing AF K mount DSLR lenses.

This camera would set up as a true bridge between P&S user interface and the DSLR line IQ, and any lens (except for those specifically designed for this body with a rear element that protrudes into a DSLR's mirror box space) would have the ability to be retained if one later decides to upgrade to a Pentax DSLR body. None of the other MILCs can do this. True backward compatibility, and in this case forward compatibility, is a unique Pentax quality, and it's distinctly user friendly, as Pentax has always been. Pentax has touted this in the past, but not really taken the time to fully explain what this really could mean to a new user.

It should be interesting if true. . .

I'm not much for rumors - I've seen too many that completely miss the mark. However, if this is priced reasonably I might bite, too. I had always considered the Q to be the way I'd be likely to go for a light-weight, compact back-up. But something about the size of the DS isn't all that big, and it would be wonderful to have the K5's sensor in it for indoor shots. I still think the Q is more money than I'm willing to put out on a small, secondary camera, especially since I don't need one - I already have 3 dSLRs.

According to this translation there is no optical viewfinder. Sounds like an ILC similar to the Sony NEX seres rather than the dslr like a55/a65/a77.

I wait with anticipation. I have looked hard at the K5 but find it hard to justify the cost when I am getting good results from the K20 BUT a new form factor with compatibility with my current lenses would be very appealing. I have a minimum of Nikon compatible gear just so I could get a very nice 80-200mm f2.8 at a bargain price, but I am not going down that road (two S2pro Fujis, and two other lenses are it). Pentax is so much more familiar to operate.

Any bets? I would say a larger mirrorless is more likely than a full frame DSLR, what do you think?

A NEX type K mount body would be to my liking

G'day all

Sight unseen too ... I would be following my previous thinking on the movements in digital cameras > ie- it will be very similar to any existing APS-format dSLR but will replace the mirror box with an EVF viewfinder to become a mirrorless dSLR

As I have said in other postings previously, I see the EVF "growing-up" some more and completely replacing the old [but very functional] mirror mechanism, thus completing the change from film/mechanical to digital/electronic

After that, who know where it'll all go to... ?
Regards, Phil

Well, here it is:

http://www.petapixel.com/2012/02/01/...orless-camera/

It's... well... "interesting" in design... the black and yellow design isn't as nice as I hoped, but, hell, lets see how much it costs when it's announced properly tomorrow... if it has some J1-esque crazy FPS video modes though it's a no brainer for me, and will buy one.

It'll be interesting to see how much it's going to cost. I don't care for the yellow, but I like the white and black one - but then I've always wanted a "storm trooper" Kx or Kr. I suspect this will be more expensive than I would want to put out for another camera. I'd need to see one first - I wouldn't mind something that's purse size.

$750 body only
$899 with the 40xs
$999 with 3 lenses (40xs, 18-55 and 50-200).

This is going to be a very decent back-up to the K5 (but where the bloody hell is the OVF !) or travel camera.
