Default Snowy hike to Doll Flats

Took a quick hike up the Appalachian Trail from the town of Roan Mountain up to Doll Flats recently. Cold and wind (and frisky dogs) kept us moving pretty quickly, so just took a few snapshots along the way...

We've had very changeable weather here in East Tennessee lately. Plenty of precipitation, with plenty of freezing and thawing, makes for some interesting ice formations. Here are some "moss-cicles" and "rock-cicles"

And here are some more extensive ice formations showing the seams in some overhanging sandstone cliffs. (which angle do you prefer?)

This section of the AT is mostly uphill, and mostly younger forest (an old mining location). But there are some individual trees of great age - like this ancient white oak.

I don't know the origin of the name "Doll Flats." But it is a fine open meadow near the top of the mountain - a great place to camp and enjoy the views.

Speaking of views, here's the view from the edge of the woods near Doll Flats, looking towards the Tennessee/North Carolina border.

Notice in that first of the view photos an area of neatly-arranged trees. Christmas Tree farms are very common at the TN/NC border. It takes several years from planting seedlings to harvesting marketable trees, so it takes much long range planning as well as hard work...

Here's a closer look at the farm.

We had planned to continue on another mile or two up to Hump Mountain, but freezing rain began to make for slippery crusts on the rocks and snow. So we headed on back down, and will visit Hump on another snowy day!

Hope you enjoyed this little wintry trip, and that you will share your comments & critique!

When shooting scenery I seem to always look at the big picture, your images are teaching me to also look at the detail, Great job Mole
