Harriet, you are so right. HDR is a great tool, but one that probably doesn't need to be used nearly as often as many believe. Frankly, I find it easier to tweak in PP than to use HDR. I'm guessing the images above are jpgs - am right or wrong? I ask because I have found that even when shooting jpgs, I can alter an image's dynamic range quite a bit in iPhoto (never mind Aperture with RAW) while getting great results.

BTW, I feel the same way about image stabilization: A great tool that is often overused and can give worse results if not used properly in some situations. I tend to leave IS off and only turn it on when I'm clearly using a shutter speed slow enough to invite trouble.

These were both shot raw, I pretty much alway shoot raw. With Lightroom, it doesn't really matter and having the bit extra dynamic range is nice to have.

I have to agree that was very nice PP, I didn't realize you could push so much on a K-5 exposure. I'll have to try LR beta myself but I'm not so sure I could push so much with my ist DL nor NX100

The 6 mp sensor was fairly forgiving for shadows, but I doubt it was this forgiving. I know that I could not do this with the K10, K20 or K7 - they are/were less forgiving than than the DS/DL/K100. I don't know about the NX100.

Maybe I'll have to try a comparison under similar conditions with the K100, K7 and K5, just to see if what I believe is true or not. Now to get some spare moments to actually do it...
